Be a Roman

It's Christmas day today. It's probably not going to matter for most non Christian NRI's. I think it should matter to us even if we are not Christians. If we miss out on the festivities celebrated here in US then what are we left with? As far as me and my wife are concerned, all festivals irrespective of the religious significance is mainly for breaking monotony in life. We don't have the opportunity to celebrate Diwali and other good Hindu festivals. So we should try to celebrate Christmas, Halloween etc... as long as we are here. I see most people doing it these days as they don't want their child to be left behind. That's a good sign as people are looking outside their religion.

We should be a roman when we are in Rome. There is nothing wrong with that.

Interesting article in the Washington Post on this exact topic. Something we parents can learn from!

You're right of course. You should try to join in the festivities... if not for being politically correct :), atleast to bring some festivity into your lives.

Btw, nowadays Christmas and many other festivals are being celebrated in India, irrespective of religion. We celebrate all the festivals in our offices and in malls, where everyone pitches, buy gifts and feel festive... so just think you're over here :D and have fun!!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance !!

My husband who was brought up here in the US, always tells me how upset he became when his mom told him there is no santa claus. He heard this when he was 3 years old. I can understand why she said that though, 30 years back Indian parents here were probably much more worried about their kids (as there weren't that many indian kids compared to now) and she probably was not sure if it was a good idea for them to celebrate a "christian" holiday..

But as years went by they started to have a chritmas tree and now they celebrate the holiday. My point here is kids love it when they feel belonged especially when we are talking about gifts, decorative tree etc.. So why not make them happy..
