What's wrong with you people?

One thing that really bugs me is the fact that some people don't even have a common courtesy of smiling back when I smile at them. They usually give a stiff look or just look down and walk away.

I know it's not just me. I have heard this complaint from others too.

Yes, you are not alone.. This bothers me a lot too.. Sometimes I smile and/or greet and people act as if they didn't see me at all?! I try my best to avoid them the next time..

Don't expect too much politeness from People of Indian origin - to the contrary, expect occasional rude behvior and and even uncivil outbursts.

Kinds in India are taught expertise in building VLSI circuits and nano devices by the time we are 18, but no lessons on manners, etiquite or politness to live in a civlilzed culture.

Even in the US, whether strangers greet you is regional. In NYC - It is absolutely not expected. Chicago - not so much of an hard edge as NYC, but only in the subrubs will you find very civil behavior. Generally people in the country side are polite...

Actually I wrote this with Indians in mind. But i wanted to be politically correct.

Find out if that person is doing that only to you or to others. If it is only to you, it could probably be because of pervious experiences where the person was the affected party. If you want the other person to be responsive again, try to talk to him on one and one basis and see if the matter can be resolved by telling him that it hurts when you don't get a smile back and also be prepared to listen to the other side of the story. If he behaves the same with others, then you just don't care.
All the best

I meant more about people we just see face to face in a public place like malls, stores etc... Your plan might be good in places where we may actually get to see the person over and over again.

More than me my smiley faced wife encounters this a lot.

Like I said earlier, as an American of Indian origin, let me say again - a big percentage of Indian immigrants in America don't know the meaning of terms such as "civility" or "polite society". Don't let that bother you. In fact, be VERY GLAD that you are a much better person than they are.

The Indian kids born\brought up here that I have encountered in a multitude of situations seem to be very decent though. The adults could learn a lot from them..
