Superficial

Most people must have read about Arun Nayar – Liz Hurley wedding and how grand they are. Also most of you must have heard about Lakshmi Mittal’s daughters wedding and many other Indian big shot weddings. One thing I don’t understand is why are Indians so obsessed with extravagant weddings?

One thing I have observed with most of my fellow Indians is that, they are not shy to display how opulent they are to the whole society. People wear these big gold ornaments; celebrate opulent weddings etc. just to show the society that they are rich. What is even more pathetic is that sometimes people, who are not really rich, spend beyond their means just to show the society that they are no less compared to others.

We talk about how superficial western society is. On the other hand we do the same thing.

I really don’t understand what people gain by showing off their opulence and by being so superficial?

It's a human trait. I don't think we Indians are any better or worse at it than people from other countries.

Thanks Salim. Welcome to Random Thoughts. I agree it's a human trait.

I do believe Indians are WORSE than many other cultures, especially western ones. Indians are not only superficial, they are hypocritically so.

Name ONE redeeming quality that modern day Indian culture has and I will show you a copy of a western value.

And don't give me any c%$* about 5000 year old culture and all that nonsense. I believe that Indian culture is more than 5000 years old. You know why? The country looks like it hasn't been cleaned in 10,000 years!

And it is the same with any place the "Indian Diaspora" setups up in other countries - like Devon street in Chicago.

Yet, as you rightly pointed out the Indian upper class will spend billions in ridiculous show offs, and hire millions of "servants" every year.

The "Ramayana" pushing hypocrites in Chicago and all other major centers of Indian population are especially low.

Do I sound angry? You bet I do. I am angry that my cultural heritage of tolerenace, plurality and high ideals has been highjacked by the "modern day" Indian losers of shallow character.

i have a feeling that,in india people celebrate the marriage.(leave aside the celebrity marriages, they are purely show off)

and marriage happens once in india.if you dont even celebrate that also, then what else is life for?

those who feel that its not neccessary, then dont celebrate.but speaking ill of somebody's happiness is not a good thing either.

this is my thoughts on the subject.

Kamal,

My personal opinion is that such blatant dislay of opulece does not correspond to happiness.

Do you really think that the people are spending money on marraiges because it makes them happy? Mpst of them are doing it because they have to.

My 2 cents.
